Black History Month takes place during the whole month of February. At H-B Woodlawn we celebrate all month long with many activities. Some of the things that we are doing during this month include KanKouran West African Dancing on the 14th, the Black Movies and Bold Stories event during Equity block on the 20th, and Legacy of Excellence, our Black History month homecoming show, on the 27th.
On February 14th, the KanKouran West African Dancing is taking place in the auditorium. The KanKouran West African dance company provides quality entertainment and educational programs for seniors, juniors, and children groups; dancers come from the Caribbean, Africa, and the United States. Rosie, the HB activities coordinator, is especially excited for the dancing because it always impresses her.
Another thing that is happening during this month is the ‘Black Movies and Bold Stories’ event. There are over 40 movies and shows that are going to be shown around the school that all relate to Black History Month. Some examples include Simone Biles Rising, Black Panther, Black is King, and many more! This is taking place during the Equity block on the 20th.
Last on the list is the Legacy of Excellence Black History Month homecoming show, taking place on the 27th in the auditorium. This event has been taking place since 2018 and is a huge part of Black History Month here at H-B. Every year the auditorium is always packed with people attending the show, and it’s always hard to find a spot!
Black History Month is a very important month here at H-B with all the fun activities that take place! If you have any questions or want to learn more, you can talk to Rosie or Nekya.
