In the high-stakes world of diplomacy, few challenges are more dangerous than stepping into a new role in the midst of an international crisis. The Diplomat wastes no time pulling its audience into tension-filled situations. Newly-appointed US Ambassador Kate Wyler navigates the fraught political landscape of Great Britain in the aftermath of a deadly bombing of a British ship by an unknown aircraft. As Wyler races to prevent further conflict, the show unfolds a narrative of power, politics, and personal drama.
The show follows Ambassador Wyler as she does her best to stop a full scale war and discover the mastermind behind a tragic event that killed almost fifty British officers. Wyler must create alliances with the right people and hold together her turbulent marriage while she’s on the cusp of a huge promotion that will change her life.
The Diplomat’s plot is full of shocking turns of events that leave the audience wanting more. The suspense of not knowing who was behind the mysterious attack on the British ship hooks you into watching episode after episode. It’s one of those shows that you want to binge all day, even when you know you’ve had enough TV time. In my opinion, shows that keep you hooked are the best ones, because it gives you something to look forward to. It also makes you end the episode with so much anticipation for the next one after a cliffhanger.
However, I will say there were a few episodes that were not always the most gripping. I’m the kind of TV watcher that needs to be paying attention the whole time. If my eyes aren’t glued to the screen, it’s probably not the show for me.
Along with being a show full of suspense and waiting, The Diplomat is also a great show to watch if you are interested in foreign affairs. The show is very realistic to the real world of diplomacy so you’re able to see how diplomats must make alliances and how every day is a struggle as shots continue to get fired at them. Although there are non-realistic pieces of this show, it’s kind of like getting the inside scoop of a real diplomat’s life, navigating the rocky shores of a country recovering from a tragic attack.
The Diplomat’s politics is a spicy mix of fantasy and reality. If you’re looking for a show to watch that teaches you about the different roles in the government and their jobs, this show is for you. I started watching this show not knowing much about who diplomats are and their jobs. Even though this is a fictional show, after watching The Diplomat, I have learned so much about what life might look like for a diplomat, and about the roles in our government. People like the Foreign Secretary, Prime Minister, and Chief of Staff were all big characters in the show and while watching, you are able to learn more about their responsibilities which can translate to the real world.
Overall, I definitely recommend watching The Diplomat, as it is a show filled with suspense, political education, and power. You learn about each character’s personality, whether it’s depicted as power hungry and evil, or relatable. In a realistic world of diplomacy, the ‘bad guy’ might just be doing what they think is right.
The Diplomat has also been renewed for a third season! Although there has not been an official date announced for season three, we can expect it will be full of bombshells. Creator, showrunner, and executive producer, Debora Cahn, told Tudum that season three “flips the chessboard,” and in season three “Kate lives the particular nightmare that is getting what you want.”
