As the general election comes up, and talk of candidates gets stronger, I am voting for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz and I want to talk about why.
I am disabled. It is a big part of my identity. My disabilities are difficult to deal with and I am in pain most days. Donald Trump made this statement about people with severe disabilities: “maybe those kinds of people should just die.” Project 2025, a plan for Trump’s presidency created by the Heritage Foundation, may call for cutting Social Security and Medicare. That may make it so disabled people who can’t work may not be able to pay for necessities. Harris, on the other hand, promises to strengthen Social Security and Medicare.
I am also nonbinary. It is very important to me that Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is included in schools. Donald Trump, and other republicans, are opposed to DEI and are working to take it away from schools. Donald Trump falsely claims that schools are performing transgender surgeries on minors. On top of all of that, Trump wants to eliminate the Department of Education. That would have devastating effects, including making it so not all students have equal access to education.
I am assigned female at birth, an identity which is important to me. Donald Trump wants to uphold abortion bans. That could have, and already has, devastating consequences for women and people assigned female at birth. Women have died due to abortion bans. What if that was your mother? Your sister? Your best friend? You wouldn’t want them to suffer, would you?
For the sake of all the women, transgender, and disabled people in your life, vote blue.
