Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15th to October 15th. This is because many Latin American countries declared their independence from Spain during this time.
Different groups in the United States celebrate in different ways. For example, Mexicans celebrate by hosting parades, food trucks, traditional dances, and so much more.
Meanwhile, Costa Ricans celebrate their day of independence by hosting a traditional torch relay, lantern parades, and fireworks and concerts. A lot of countries during this time also sing their national anthem to commemorate the place they call home.
Another way people celebrate their country’s Independence Day is by preparing and eating their local cuisine. For example, in Colombia and Venezuela, they eat a type of food called arepas. Arepas are grilled corn cakes usually filled with different fillings such as meat, beans or cheese. Meanwhile, in Peru, they prepare a national non-alcoholic beverage called chicha morada. It is made from fruit juices and purple corn. One of my favorite foods is a dessert called arroz con leche. It is basically a rice pudding and can be served hot or cold.
Hispanic Heritage Month at H-B will be celebrated on October 9th. We will be doing this by providing soccer games and clinics on the field, live music in the living room, and a lottery in the cafeteria. There is also going to be a taco truck in the bus loop, Dia de Los Muertos Mask making, and Papel Picado in the atrium. We hope to see you all at the celebration!
