As you might know, May is Asian and Pacific Islander month and here at H-B, we had our big celebration during Equity Block on May 22nd. The Equity Block that took place was led by the AAPI cohort. The activities held were Tinikling and Squid Games, Dancing, Origami, Henna, a Kona Ice Truck and Boba.
Did you know that the first AAPI month was held in May 1990? President George H.W. Bush issued a proclamation on May 7th 1990, stating that from then on, May would be AAPI month. The reason May was chosen for AAPI month was to celebrate the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the U.S. which was on May 7, 1843. It also marked the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869.
On Thursday May 22nd when the Equity Block took place, there were many activities going on in the lobby. People were participating in games, eating food, and having fun! The boba in particular was a big hit and had a huge line. Many people also got henna on their arms and hands.
Leah Meder, a 7th grader said “my favorite part of the Equity Block was the henna tattoos because all the designs were so pretty and it was very fun to have beautiful designs on your hands and arms”.
Overall, this year’s AAPI month celebration was a major success with lots of fun activities. Come back next year for more Equity Block fun!
