As you have probably heard, the middle school play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, is having its debut in the auditorium tonight! I interviewed three middle schoolers who are a part of the production to get their honest opinions and answers about the show.
Many of the students who auditioned to be a part A Midsummer Night’s Dream wanted to do it because they had already been a part of a play before, and really enjoyed the memorable experience they had gained from it. One student also wanted to audition because they wanted to try something new, especially because they had seen other H-B productions before and had been inspired.
A big part of being a part of an H-B production, is the camaraderie with the other cast and tech crew. “Definitely the cast,” said Celia Kilpatrick, a 7th grader playing Oberon, after I asked her favorite part about being a part of the play. “The cast is so funny, you’re like in the middle of a run, and someone does this hilarious thing, and you’re supposed to keep a straight face, and everybody just bursts out laughing!”
The majority of the students I interviewed all said that they were super excited for opening night, because they finally got to showcase what they had been working on for many months. “Because everybody gets to see how hard we worked!” answered Abdullah Hamza, a 7th grader that plays Philostrate.
Throughout the play, there are a few set changes, light switches, and curtain draws. Behind the people who run these switches, is a stage manager that cues when they should pull the lever, or run onto stage. Ayn Kim, also a 7th grader, is a stage manager for A Midsummer Night’s Dream and does cues for these things. She believes, along with a couple other cast members, that she gives more stability and order to the play because of her role.
Finally, I asked all the interviewees why people should come and watch the play. “I think that a lot of the characters have roles that suit,” says Ayn. As an example, she brings up Puck, who is played by Willa Stroup (’30). All the students alike said that they thought the play will be hilarious, and that everybody will have a good laugh while watching A Midsummer Night’s Dream. So, come have a laugh with us in the H-B auditorium!
