On February 26, during one of H-B Woodlawn’s activity blocks, the auditorium lights dimmed and the song “This Little Light of Mine” began to play. Seven performers began to make their way on stage, side-shuffling and clapping their hands to the beat.
On February 2, 1959, four African-American students: Gloria Thompson, Michael Jones, Lance Newman, and Ronald Deskins, integrated Stratford Junior High School in Arlington, Virginia.
These 4 students became the first Black students to attend an all-white school in the state, marking a major milestone in Virginia’s history and desegregation.
This event was a peaceful, landmark moment in the Civil Rights movement. It was identified as the end of Virginia’s “Massive Resistance” policy, which had blocked school separatism, proving that integration could occur without the violence being seen elsewhere.
The Encore performance, “The Day Nothing Happened,” brought this story to life by showing each student’s perspective. It highlighted the nervousness, fear, and bravery the students felt on that first day.
The actors also showed conversations between the students and their parents, who encouraged them to stay calm, be brave, and do what was right. These moments helped the audience understand that the students were supported by their families and that courage sometimes comes with guidance from those who care.
H-B Woodlawn principal Casey Robinson, who has met the students, shared, “I think the big takeaway that I wanted students to have is that young people can make a huge impact through their actions.”
This story is especially important to H-B Woodlawn because Stratford Junior High School was the original H-B building. The same place where this brave moment happened is now Dorothy Hamm Middle School, but the history remains part of the community. For students today, it makes the past feel personal and reminds them that even small acts of courage can create lasting change.
