The World Cup is a soccer cup that occurs every four years in a different part of the world and is one of the most famous sporting events in world history.
There are many different teams that play each other in the Cup in the group stage of the event. Out of four teams per group, only the first and second teams are guaranteed to progress to the knockout round. This year, the top eight third place teams will also progress.
The last World Cup winner was Argentina in 2022. They beat France in the finals on penalties.
Many new teams qualified for the 2026 World Cup including Haiti, Curaçao, Ivory Coast, Cape Verde, Jordan, Uzbekistan, and Panama.
All of these countries played each other to qualify for the World Cup. The aforementioned teams are qualified right now, but more teams will be qualified soon.
Every year, one country or region hosts the World Cup. This year North America is hosting so matches are being played in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. U.S. states that are hosting the cup are California, Texas, New Jersey, Georgia, Florida, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Washington.
The first ever World Cup was in 1930. The winner of that World Cup was Uruguay, who beat Argentina 4-2.
Overall, The World Cup is an entertaining cup to watch whether you’re seeing it on T.V. or attending the actual game. Many Americans, including Arlingtonians, are excited to have the opportunity to see a match in person.
