One common holiday tradition is watching holiday movies. We asked teachers and students what their favorite festive films were and why, and there were some surprising answers.
There are thousands of holiday movies and classics that people watch year after year. “Home Alone” is one of them. It is about a young boy named Kevin. One year, he and his family plan to go to Paris. The night before their trip, he wishes for his family to disappear, and the next morning they are nowhere to be found. They went to Paris without him! Later, he overhears two burglars conspiring to rob his house. He then takes matters into his own hands and sets up traps throughout the house. This movie is full of friendship, action and comedy!
Another classic is “Elf.” “Elf” follows a person that grew up as an elf. When he finds out that he is a human, he is crushed and goes to New York City to find his biological father. He has lots of hilarious, entertaining mishaps during his journey. At first, his dad is dubious of his identity, but they end up having a good relationship. This is an amusing, classic movie that is a must see.
Sixth and ninth grade math teacher, Rich, said his favorite holiday movie was “A Christmas Story” because he can relate to the main character, Ralphie. “One year I got a gun for Christmas,” Rich recalled. “I still have it today.” This Christmas movie was released in 1983, and was named a classic almost immediately. It features Ralphie, a 9-year-old who wants a BB gun for Christmas, despite numerous warnings from adults. This movie is set in the 1940’s, and Ralphie navigates a series of adventures such as: Dealing with a bully, his friend getting his tongue stuck on a frozen pole, and his father winning a “major award”—a lamp shaped like a woman’s leg in a fishnet stocking.
One middle schooler, Leela Changela, said that one of her favorites is the hit 2023 Freaky Friday-esque Christmas movie, “Family Switch. “It’s a really funny, modern Christmas movie,” She stated. The story follows the Walker family: parents Jess and Bill, teenage children CC and Wyatt, Miles the toddler, and Pickles the dog. Jess and Bill feel disconnected from their children, and on the night of a rare planet alignment, they all get in a fight and have a full body switch, with CC and Jess, Wyatt and Bill, and even Miles and Pickles.
Another middle schooler, Juliana Manji, said her favorite holiday movie is “The Muppets Christmas Carol.” This movie is one of many adaptations of Charles Dickinson’s “A Christmas Carol.” The story follows Ebenezer Scrooge, a mean wealthy man who hates Christmas. However, one Christmas Eve, he is visited by three spirits and changes his perspective on Christmas. This movie is full of singing holiday spirit.
So, this holiday season, grab a nice cup of hot cocoa and watch one of these great holiday movies.
