Zohran Mamdani was elected the 111th mayor of New York City on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, a historical victory that will make him the first Muslim to lead America’s most populous city.
Mamdani secured 50.4% of the vote, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent.
Mamdani’s win, which drew over 1 million votes, makes him the youngest mayor in New York City in more than a century and the first of South Asian descent.
Mamdani’s campaign centered on a progressive agenda focused on making the city more affordable for its residents, with promises including fare-free buses, universal child care, and a push for higher taxes on the wealthy. Mamdani even wants to raise the minimum wage in NYC to $30 by 2030.
“Tonight, against all odds, we have grasped it. New York, tonight, you have delivered. A mandate for change. A mandate for a new kind of politics. A mandate for a city we can afford. And a mandate for a government that delivers exactly that.” Mamdani said in his victory speech at the Brooklyn Paramount.
Zohran Mamdani will actually take office on January 1, 2026, when he is sworn in as mayor, and has already begun naming his transition team.
Mamdani’s win was celebrated among many American citizens, and was an addition to the nationwide “blue wave.”
