Popular author E. Lockhart visits H-B!

On Friday, November 7th,  author  E. Lockhart came to the H-B Woodlawn library.

E. Lockhart has written the famous novel “We Were Liars.” The book is about a group of kids on a private island, three of who are from the rich Sinclair family. One summer, something called “the incident” happens. Two other books in the series are set in the same universe and can be read alone, though all of them read together give a big picture of this world.

E. Lockhart has also written a book called “Whistles,” which is about a new Gotham City heroine.

Lunch was provided in the library for the people attending the meet & greet with the author. Lockhart had a presentation and a small Q&A session and also signed some books for students. Lockhart’s presentation focused on what affects your creativity and writing, such as the idea that the way you talk bleeds into the way you write, and that what you love gets put into your creativity.

Lockhart showed how examples from her own life impacts her writing. She grew up in New York, loved comics and fairy tales, and grew up speaking specific slang. These things all affected her writing style, the words she uses, her grammar, and her story plots.

Since E. Lockhart is such a famous author who now has a show adaption of “We Were Liars” on Prime Video, I wondered how she had come to H-B. I interviewed the librarian, Reina, as she planned this event for students.

There are many reading programs Reina is in touch with in our region. One is R.E.A.D., which is run by a woman affectionately called the Pajama Mama. Reina recently got an email from the Pajama Mama saying that E. Lockhart had something that was cancelled and offered for the author to come to H-B. Reina immediately jumped at the opportunity.

As mentioned, after the presentation, E.Lockhart got to sign many books and answer student questions. This isn’t the first time the library has had a big event, so make sure to keep an eye out for the next one!
