The Virginia Gubernatorial election will be held on November 4th, 2025. The election decides who will be the next governor of Virginia. The current incumbent is governor Glenn Youngkin. Youngkin is not eligible to run for governor in this election as the Virginia constitution prohibits a governor serving two consecutive terms.
The candidates for governor are Democrat Abigail Spanberger and Republican Winsome Earle-Sears. According to the New York Times, Spanberger shows a consistent lead against opponent Sears. Spanberger has many plans for improving Virginia. Some of her goals include growing Virginia’s workforce, growing business investment in Virginia, and growing trade opportunities.
Earle-Sears’ plans for Virginia include reducing the cost of living, being tough on crime, giving children quality education, and protecting the right to work. She has been endorsed by incumbent governor Glenn Youngkin. Sears is a supporter of many of president Donald Trump’s policies.
One controversial issue in the governor’s race has been transgender rights. Spanberger believes in championing transgender access to bathrooms and sports, while Sears wishes to eliminate “ideology” from the government. Both Spanberger and Sears have yard signs around Virginia, as well as TV advertisements.
Early in-person voting has been going on since mid-September and ended on November 1st. Tomorrow thousands of other Virginians will cast their ballots in-person in one of the few statewide elections occurring in the United States this year.
