One of the major bonuses of celebrating Halloween is candy. But not all candy is created equal, and opinions vary depending on the person.
The most popular candy for students at H-B is Swedish Fish. Swedish Fish are small red gummies in the shape of fish. They were released in the 1950’s in Sweden and were originally called ‘pastel fish’.
Most people think that the flavor of Swedish Fish is cherry but it is actually lingonberry, a berry native to Scandinavia. 6th grader Cole Myklegard said “I like the texture of them and how it is different from other gummies, the flavor is also really good.”
On the other hand, adults’ favorite candy is the classic Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup. They have a hard chocolate shell and are filled with peanut butter. You can also enjoy them as a smaller version similar to the shape of an M&M which are called Reese’s Pieces.
Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups were created in 1928 by H.B Reese. They were originally called “penny cups”, because they only cost a penny to get one at the time. They were sold to The Hershey Company in 1963.
English and journalism teacher Christy Gill said “I like that they are sweet and salty and I think combo goes very good together.”
For both adults and kids the least liked candy is licorice. Particularly black licorice but all have been said to be terrible.
Licorice has been around forever, but the way we know it today has only been around since the mid 1700’s. It used to be used for medical reasons dating all the way to ancient times, and then was turned into candy in 1614 by Sir George Saville. Back then, it was described as bitter and horrible. In response, a company called Dunhill thought to add some sugar and try to improve the taste.
Even though some people love licorice it didn’t go as well as Dunhill wanted, especially for 6th grader Lucas Madden, who said “It tastes very artificial and the texture is way too chewy and gross I swear I almost threw up after I had it.”
There are a lot of other really good candy out there but these are just the favorites and least favorite within our school. So when you are thinking of what Halloween candy to buy, take into consideration the options highlighted here.
