The beloved holiday called Halloween is coming up soon, so that means the best traditions are coming along with it! There have been Halloween traditions at H-B for many years, but there are a few new ones this year!
The Halloween festival events you’ve been waiting for are planned and you’ve probably seen some of the posters hanging around the building. The events include a costume contest in the gym, with categories like funniest and scariest, and apple fishing outside the gym.
If you prefer slightly spookier options, there will also be a high-school scary movie in the library, (grab popcorn in the living room for $1 on your way there), a haunted black box with an entry fee of $3, and a Walk of Feels in the cafeteria.
Other events include a Shriver Trick or Treat on the third floor and a Kahoot in the auditorium. The final events, which are also the newest additions this year, include pumpkin stacking in the atrium and Fright Bite in the auditorium! All of these events will take place during a community block on Halloween.
To learn about the new events, I interviewed two eighth graders involved behind the scenes, Celia Kilpatrick and Duncan Carr. From what I asked, I learned about how events are chosen and planned. Celia and Duncan told me a committee of HIVE students takes ideas that worked from the previous years and also brainstorms new ones to make fresh and fun activities that they then test out! This year they’re trying out pumpkin stacking and fright bite. Fright Bite is a cookie baking contest where you bake cookies at home and judges from the school’s staff decide on the best ones. Pumpkin stacking involves trying to stack large pumpkin looking boxes as fast as possible.
Although the events don’t cost much to put on, the staff ideally try to use already available materials. When they’re not able to, parents are asked to supply donations.
All in all, this year’s events for our favorite spooky holiday, Halloween, seem very promising. Hope you’re ready for a ton of fun!
