The Pride community block is today throught HB!
June is here which means pride month is in full swing! H-B is celebrating Pride through a community block lead by GSA today activities all over the building. Some of the activities include bingo (with prizes!) in the atrium, making buttons and bracelets in the library, a DJ in the living room, and decorating Wilson Blvd with side-walk chalk celebrating inclusive messaging. Kona Ice will also be selling their treats on Wilson!
Pride month first began in 1969 in honor of the stonewall uprising. It started when thousands of LGBTQ+ people gathered to celebrate Stonewall and Demonstration for equal rights.
The Pride month Equity Block is one of the bigger equity blocks during the year which means there are a lot more people participating during the event. It’s always a fun success!
Travis Reyes, a Spanish teacher and teacher sponsor of GSA, said , “Planning for Pride takes about four meetings—one each Friday throughout much of April. Each meeting focuses on a different part of the event to make sure everything comes together smoothly and reflects the spirit of our school community.”
He also said that his favorite part is “seeing students feel more comfortable having open, positive conversations—especially those who have gay family members. I’ve had students say things like, “You know, my aunt is gay, and she said it was really hard when she was younger because of bullying and name-calling.” That opens the door for us—GSA members, supportive staff, and admin—to talk about how far we’ve come.”
Make sure to stop by and visit all the activities this Thursday to celebrate Pride Month! And come back next year for more Equity Block fun! see you there!
