Summer camp is stereotypically a fun thing to do when you are alone during the summer. You can make new friends, join new activities and try new sports. But summer camp can also be a way for kids to feel excluded and unwelcome. You could be ignored by other kids in a group or worse, by your friends.
Summer camp can be good for kids because it helps them develop social skills and learn how to do things on their own, without depending on their parents. Summer camps help teach life skills that you need in order to survive the real world. It also opens your horizon up to more activities and sports.
One positive of the many positive experiences at summer camp is staying outdoors with your besties and laughing by a campfire. Spending time with your old friends and making new ones can be the highlight of your summer. Additionally, summer campers enjoy being able to make their own decisions and not having to ask permission to do something. When kids have to constantly ask permission to do something, they often don’t want to do it anymore. A good thing about camps is that you can just buy something when you want or go to the pool during free time without having to ask permission from your parents.
However, sometimes your summer camp could start out fun with your friends, but then they ditch you or become extremely obnoxious. Sometimes summer camps can even turn kids into someone they aren’t. It’s also possible that you could go to camp with a friend and they are nice to you on the way there, but once you get to camp they could completely change their personality to fit in with the other kids there. Camps claim that they are trying to make you a better person, but when it comes to teens (especially teen girls), there will always be some drama going on. Counselors claim to be watching their cabin and say that they are close to their cabin, but no child wants to tell a counselor why they are upset.
While summer camps are a good idea in theory, they can quickly escalate and become a child’s worst nightmare. Sometimes kids can be obnoxious when they get to camp because they think that their parents aren’t there, therefore they can do whatever they want. This includes, obnoxious comments, bullying and entitlement.
Summer camps are often a fun thing, but it’s good to weigh the pros and cons to decide for yourself.
