Students enjoy a snowball fight on Monday, January 6th
The winter storm that blew in on Monday the 6th of January extended the APS winter break by three and a half days. Between sledding, shoveling, and making hot chocolate, HB students were up to varying snow day activities.
While the majority of students had homework over break and had the option of using their free time to get ahead, procrastination ruled. Says one sophomore, “I didn’t do my Cornell notes for an English assignment, which I regret now. Instead, I went sledding and had a snowball fight at my friend’s house.”
Sledding was also a common theme for students. Ben ‘29 attests: “I went sledding on Prospect hill. We built a mound over an icy sidewalk, and a ramp that took you down a second hill.” In addition, “there were a lot of people sledding on Four Mile Run, since it’s so hilly.” The Thomas Jefferson sports fields also saw their fair share of sledding traffic.
In lieu of frigid outdoor activities, many students and teachers stayed indoors for cozier pursuits. “I watched a lot of reality TV,” shares Christy Gill. This author made hot chocolate for her friends and watched a new Netflix documentary about humanity entitled Cunk on Life.
Of course, students and staff had to return to school eventually. The two-hour delay on Thursday was more suitable for sleeping in than anything else, but it was nonetheless nice to evade the cold for two extra hours.
In the latter half of the week, students created a petition to keep schools closed, citing icy road conditions, that had over 8,000 signatures at the time of publication. However, APS made the decision to have a regular school day Friday, much to the chagrin of students. At long last, winter break is officially over.
